Deer Park and Riverside have merged their food programs in a cooperative agreement last week reports the Tribune.

Deer Park Food Services Director Peggy Rieper will continue to serve in the same capacity for both school districts with Deer Park paying 60% of her salary.

Deer Park Business Director Tom Crouch states the district will save $10,000-$20,000 under the new agreement with the elimination of some duplicated services. They will be able to purchase larger quantities of bulk food. Currently Deer Park’s has $700,000 annual food budget and Riverside $550,000.

With the savings, the district plans on hiring a driver to transport food between the two schools.

Rieper has worked in the Deer Park Food Service Department for the past 29 years.

Local Deer Park graduate; jockey Cassie Craver, wins 2nd. leg in our local northwest's version of the "Triple Crown."

Her first one-mile Derby win in the featured race at the North Central Washington Fair on "Dreamoneir", provided the incentive to continue on with the Derby mount.

Sunday’s one-mile prestigious Derby win at the Republic Fair again on "Dreamoneir" brought roars from the crowd. The pair have become the "people's choice" favorite now.

Craver, 22 yrs old, and an avid equestrian whose main discipline is Hunters and Jumpers, has been riding thoroughbred racehorses for about 4 yrs. Her passion is the thoroughbred horses. She started riding at age 11 mos. Cassie’s mother, Pamela Swiderski is her coach and a long-time Hunter/Jumper trainer.

Their 40 acre ranch houses rescued and several famous retired thoroughbred horses along with many other animals. They do a lot of rehab and seek good homes for the horses and animals.

Next weekend Okanongan will host the next race for the winning Derby pair, with the final 3rd. leg of our local "Triple Crown", the one-mile Derby race held on Sunday, September 9th. Fans will be thrilled and on their feet if the pair succeed, as it will be the first time in years a horse has won this title.

Air Force veteran Richard Haines was hiking near the gravel pits at Horseshoe Lake and came across the remnants of a burnt American flag someone had thrown in the bushes. Residents target practice at the gravel pits and often burn the target items according to the Tribune.

My flag is old and ready to be retired. What should I do?

Section 8k of the Flag Code states, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." Contact your local VFW Chapter and ask them for help properly disposing of your flag.

Here is the law regarding desecration of the American flag:

RCW 9.86.030
Desecration of flag.

No person shall knowingly cast contempt upon any flag, standard, color, ensign or shield, as defined in RCW 9.86.010, by publicly mutilating, defacing, defiling, burning, or trampling upon said flag, standard, color, ensign or shield.

RCW 9.86.050
Penalty.

Any violation of this chapter shall be a gross misdemeanor.

*** CHANGE IN 2007 *** (SEE 1259-S.SL) ***
RCW 79A.05.165
Penalties.

(1) Every person is guilty of a misdemeanor who:

(a) Cuts, breaks, injures, destroys, takes, or removes any tree, shrub, timber, plant, or natural object in any park or parkway except in accordance with such rules as the commission may prescribe; or

(e) Lights any fire upon any park or parkway, except in such places as the commission has authorized, or willfully or carelessly permits any fire which he or she has lighted or which is under his or her charge, to spread or extend to or burn any of the shrubbery, trees, timber, ornaments, or improvements upon any park or parkway, or leaves any campfire which he or she has lighted or which has been left in his or her charge, unattended by a competent person, without extinguishing it.

The next meeting of the Clayton/Deer Park Historical Society will be held on Saturday, September 8th, from 9 A.M. until 10 A.M., at the Clayton Drive In, in Clayton.

Although not yet open for regular business, the restaurant traditionally opens its doors an hour early exclusively to historical society members and historical society visitors - and during this time we attempt to carry out our official business. Our meetings are informal. Anyone who is willing to follow the normal decorum is welcome to attend - if nothing else, just to see what we are all about. Anyone with an interest in any aspect of the history of the Clayton and Deer Park area should stop by.

We are a growing institution, with plans for the future - a future you might enjoy helping to create. No appointment is necessary - just appear at the door and state your intent to attend the meeting. We will find you a chair at the table. After the meeting, the restaurant will be officially opened. You might want to stay, gab, and enjoy one of Clayton's world famous "Clayton Burgers".
