Your computer memory is what enables the processor to function properly. There are two main types of speed modules; those that use DDR2 and those that use DDR3. Those using DDR3 are faster. The faster the machine, the more optimally the operating system will perform. There are two main ways in which memory speed is determined; rating it by the bandwidth or the clock rating. When buying computer memory, check that either of this is listed. For instance, a memory with DDR3 1333 / PC3 - 12800 will be faster than one rated DDR3 1066 / PC3 - 8500 or one with DDR2T8000 / PC2 - 6400. The former in each case is the clock rating and the latter is the bandwidth.

You can easily upgrade your computer memory from what you currently have to increase the speed of the machine. Most desktops have up to 4 memory slots. Laptops on the other hand are limited, with only 2 slots at most. The maximum amount of memory that can be upgraded on laptops is different for each and depends on its properties. Apple memory for instance, can be as little as 512MB for any operating system or as big as 3GB for either MAC or Windows.
